View from the slopes of the Cordillera Negra to the highest tropical mountain worldwide (6768 m). The steep face of the lower N summit was the source of two catastrophic debris avalanches: in 1962, the area of Ranrahirca (right bottom) was badly affected. In 1970, part of the avalanche even jumped over a hill and destroyed the town of Yungay, with thousands of fatalities. The site of the former town, Campo Santo, appears near the left central bottom of the image.
