The Lago de Chungará (4520 m asl.) has been impounded by the deposit of a 6 cubic kilometres large rock/debris avalanche originating from a volcanically induced collapse of a slope of the now dormant stratovolcano Parinacota (6348 m, reflecting in the lake) approx. 8,000 years ago.
