Les Grandes Jorasses (4208 m) in the background. The photo was taken from a ridge representing a backscarp, indicating the deformations characteristic for the northwestern slope of Mont de la Saxe. The comparatively dry conditions at the top of the ridge favour the occurrence of juniper (Juniperus communis), whereas the slopes are occupied by various species of Vaccinium.
