The steep slopes of Piquinho, the spatter cone forming the summit of Montanha do Pico, support only those plants which are very well adapted to the harsh climatic conditions prevailing at 2300 m asl.: the compact growth of this cushion plant generates a favourable microclimate which helps to reduce evapotranspiration and cooling.
