East Africa is known for its rich wildlife and isolated peaks with highly specialized ecosystems. Vast deserts lead over to the N and S fringes which differ naturally, but also culturally from the rest of the continent. So do the archipelagos of Macaronesia off Africa's NW coast and the islands to the E of the continent.
