This roundish caldera in the very centre of Faial is more than 300 m deep and has a diameter of approx. 2 km. It gives the name to the stratovolcano forming the main part of the island. View from the caldera rim at approx. 850 m asl. in SE direction. Cabeço Gordo (1043 m), highest point on the island, is shown in the central background.
