Panoramic view of the S face of Nevado Salkantay (6271 m), the highest peak of the Cordillera Vilcabamba, with the basin of the moraine-dammed Laguna Salkantaycocha. On 23 February 2020, a huge chunk of rock and ice broke off the mountain side, evolving into an avalanche which impacted the lake. The displacement wave overtopped and partly eroded the dam, resulting in a catastrophic glacial lake outburst flood downstream. Since then, the lake basin has been seasonally dry.
