The stratovolcano Pico do Fogo (2829 m) represents the highest peak of Cape Verde and West Africa, and the second highest of Macaronesia. Climbing the volcano is popular among visitors of the island, but should only be done with an experienced guide. Rocky portions of the volcano's slopes are used for the way up, whereas the huge aprons of pyroclastic material allow for a quick and easy descent. The villages of Portela and Bangaeira can be seen in the background of the photo.
