Pico do Arieiro | Volcanic layers and dikes

WI_md125.jpg

Alternating layers of solidified lava and pyroclastic deposits indicate the changeable volcanic history of Madeira, with phases of effusive and phases of more explosive eruptions, whereas the vertical structures in the centre of the image represent magmatic dikes. The military radar station in the summit area of Pico do Arieiro (1818 m) can be seen in the background of the photo.
