Irrigation channels, known as levadas, have formed a critical infrastructure for centuries. They transport water from the Central Mountain Massif down towards the lower slopes. More recently, levadas also have become popular hiking routes. This section of the Levada do Norte crosses one of Madeira's numerous planted Eucalyptus forests.
