Sierra Bermeja | Peridotite rock
WI_e5163.jpg Sierra Bermeja | Pinus pinasterThumbnailsSierra Bermeja with pine forest

Peridotite rock forming the slopes of the Pico de los Reales at approx. 1250 m asl. The Sierra Bermeja represents the largest outcrop of ultrabasic rocks in the western part of Europe. These rocks once formed in the Earth's mantle. They were uplifted in the course of subduction processes, and came to the surface as the overlying rocks were eroded. The trees in the background belong to the pine species Pinus pinaster.
