Panoramic view from Grettisbæli. This extremely mobile rock avalanche occurred in the morning of 7 July 2018. It travelled over a distance of 2.3 km, increasing its volume from approx. 7 million to more than 10 million cubic metres. The two-colour deposit, with the brighter part in the centre, might indicate that the event occurred in two stages. Fine sediments within the deposit show that the landslide ploughed the probably water-saturated valley bottom when broadly spreading over flat terrain and blocking the river Hítará.
