In 1967, a rock slide occurred upstream from this scene. It impacted the tongue of Steinholtsjökull. The resulting avalanche of rock and entrained ice led to the drainage of a former proglacial lake. The individual mounds are the remnants of chunks of ice and debris deposited downstream from that lake.
