Túnel Caracoles (length: 3143 m, at approx. 3200 m asl.) has led the now abandoned railway line over to Chile. It was opened in 1910 and abandoned in the 1980s. In February 2024, works were going on to convert the old rail tunnel into a second tube of the parallel Cristo Redentor road tunnel, the entrance to which appears in the background.
