The former saltpetre mine of Humberstone (in operation until 1961) has been abandoned and the associated settlement is a ghost town. However, the place has been declared a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site together with the nearby site of Santa Laura and is open to visitors. The mine of Cala Cala in the background seems to be in operation.
