The field of view includes at least five lakes, all of them occupying depressions formed by glacial processes. Übeltalferner, the largest glacier of South Tyrol, can be seen on the right side. Until summer 2005, Vogelhüttensee in the centre of the image drained through a channel in the background because the outlet towards the sandur was blocked by the tongue of the Übeltalferner. The sudden change of the drainage direction due to the retreat of the glacier resulted in a minor glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF). The inflow to Vogelhüttensee is now disconnected from the glacier.
