Until summer 2005, this lake drained through a channel not visible in the photo whereas today's outlet in the centre of the image was blocked by the tongue of Übeltalferner. The sudden change of the drainage direction due to the retreat of the largest glacier of South Tyrol resulted in a minor glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF). The inflow to Vogelhüttensee is now disconnected from the glacier.
