The sandy hummocks in the foreground are the result of a positive feedback: the root systems of pioneer plants stabilize their growing site whilst the areas in between are exposed to wind erosion - the more stable hummocks, also acting as small water reservoirs, are then suitable for colonization by further plants - and so on.
