Karakorum was the capital of the Mongol Empire in the era of Chinggis Khaan in the 13th Century. The place north of today's small town of Kharkhorin at that time was a melting pot of various cultures. This was made possible by a sophisticated system of irrigated agriculture in the surrounding areas.
