Patch of birch forest on a granite outcrop in the foreground. It becomes evident here that trees are generally better adapted to more porous substrates such as found on jointed granite. The trees' deeper root systems, compared to grasses and herbs, may explore water from deeper layers where it is protected against evaporation.
