Evening view from the Thomas A. Jaggar Museum over the Kīlauea (1247 m) Caldera. The shield volcano of Kīlauea is one of the most active volcanoes worldwide, continuously erupting since 1983. Halema'uma'u Crater is a pit crater inside the caldera. In traditional Hawai'ian mythology it is considered home of Pele, the goddess of fire and volcanism. The glow and the steam emitted from the crater originate from a lava lake.
