Assisi is well known as the place of birth and death of Francis of Assisi. This Papal minor basilica and mother church of the Minorites, one of the most important churches and places of pilgrimage in Italy, was built above his burial place. Construction started in 1227, the year after his death. In fact, the complex consists of two churches and a monastery. In 1997, the church was severely damaged by an earthquake.
