View from Kaiserschild in E direction to the Erzberg (1466 m). This mountain, due to its high content of the mineral Siderite, has been the scene of iron ore mining at least since medieval times. The ore brought prosperity to the town of Eisenerz and to the entire region named Eisenwurzen. It also was the basis for the iron industries in Linz and Donawitz, and the mining university in Leoben. In the early 21st century, mining is still important for the otherwise weak local economy.
