The Royal Palace of Madrid (in the background) is the official residence of the Spanish Royal Family. However, in the early 21st century they do not live here, but mainly use the palace for state ceremonies. The building was constructed in the mid 18th century on the site of two earlier fortresses. The statue in the foreground represents Felipe IV.
