The historic main square in the centre of Madrid was first designed in the 15th century and completed in 1619. Rectangular in shape, its appearance in the early 21st century is strongly influenced by reconstructions which became necessary after three major fires in 1631, 1672, and 1790. The buildings around the Plaza Mayor are largely uniform and arranged in symmetric order.
