Marlborough Sounds | Arapaoa Island

WI_nzs290.jpg

The Marlborough Sounds are a large network of drowned valleys, islands, and peninsulas at the N end of New Zealand's South Island. This picture shows Arapaoa Island, viewed from the ferry Picton - Wellington passing through Tory Channel / Kura Te Au. The temperate rainforests representing the natural vegetation here only remain in ravines and on rocky heads, whereas most of the land is used for livestock grazing and forestry.
