Flight Vienna Dublin, view of a site of large-scale peat harvesting. In Ireland, peat has been used for heating for more than 1000 years. The mid 20th century saw a shift to large-scale industrial peat mining. Such practices are now seen as a major environmental threat, and activities have largely shifted towards restoration of peatlands.
