The Arena of Nîmes represents one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres in the World. It was built around 100 CE and had a capacity of approx. 24,000. Later, it was converted into a fortified settlement and remained a functional residential area until the early modern period. Buildings inside were removed around 1800. Public performances resumed in 1853 with bullfights, a type of activity still practiced in the amphitheatre in the early 21st century.
