View from Kaiserschild in E direction to Eisenerz with Erzberg (1466 m). This mountain, due to its high content of the mineral Siderite, has been the scene of iron ore mining at least since the middle ages. The ore brought prosperity not only to the town of Eisenerz, but to the entire region named Eisenwurzen. It was the basis for the iron industries in Linz and Donawitz as well as for the mining university in Leoben. In the early 21st century, mining is still important for the otherwise weak local economy.
