This medieval castle sits on top of the basaltic plug of an extinct volcano, which was active approx. 2 million years ago. The site was inhabited thousands of years ago, whereas the castle itself was first mentioned in the 12th century. More recently, it has evolved into a major tourist attraction. Late afternoon view in N direction.
