Volcán Villarrica with eroded lava flow

WI_ch242_159.jpg

View up the N side of the 2860 m high stratovolcano Villarrica, one of the most active in the country and the entire Andes. It typically displays strombolian eruptions, often accompanied by lahars which evolve due to the sudden melting of snow and ice. The fume rising from the summit crater emerges from a lava lake.
