Volcán Villarrica

WI_ch242_301.jpg

Early morning view from Pucón to the 2860 m high stratovolcano Villarrica, known as Rucapillán in the Mapuche language. This basaltic-andesitic volcano is one of the most active in the country and the entire Andes. It typically displays strombolian eruptions, often accompanied by lahars which evolve due to the sudden melting of snow and ice. The fume rising from the summit crater emerges from a lava lake.
