View from Hochblanken in W direction. The N escarpment of the Damüls mountains, displaying a sequence of Cretaceous limestone layers, is shown in the left background of the photo, whereas Hoher Freschen (2004 m), built of darker, softer, and more erodible marl, can be seen in the right central background. All these rocks represent consolidated sediments deposited at the N shelf of the Tethys ocean. This so-called Helvetic system is common in Switzerland, but only exposed in the very W part of Austria.
