Kanisfluh and Mittagsfluh are composed of Jurassic limestone. The mountains behind consist of Cretaceous limestone and marl as well as flysch. These rocks, except for the flysch, formed at the N shelf of the Tethys ocean. This so-called Helvetic system is more common in Switzerland than in Austria.
