Kanisfluh is composed of Jurassic limestone, and Hirschberg and Winterstaude of Cretaceous limestone. All these rocks formed at the N shelf of the Tethys ocean. This so-called Helvetic system is commonly exposed in Switzerland, but only found in the very W part of Austria.
