View from the vicinity of the Lagoa do Capitão in SW direction to Montanha do Pico with its summit cone Piquinho (2351 m). This stratovolcano is the highest mountain of the Azores and of Portugal. It reaches above the planetary boundary layer, so that the summit area is much less humid than the rest of the island. Clouds are moving in from the N side at this point in time. This means that also the S part of the island enjoys dry and sunny conditions due to foehn effects.
