The Azores laurel is one of the most prominent representatives of the forests and shrub forests of the archipelago, also known as laurisilva. Its habitat has been severely diminished throughout the past centuries. The lava field Mistério da Prainha, however, is unusable for cattle grazing, so that the natural ecosystems have been preserved.
