Panoramic view from Costado da Nau in W direction. In 1957 and 1958, the eruption of the submarine Capelinhos volcano led to the appearance of a new peninsula, extending the land area of Faial towards W, but also resulted in major damage to buildings, agricultural fields, and infrastructure. A small emigration wave to North America was the consequence. 65 years later, part of the newly formed land has been eroded by the sea, and the site has become a major tourist attraction.
