This lighthouse came into service in 1903 and was abandoned in 1957 due to the eruption of the Capelinhos volcano, the remnants of which are shown in the background of the scene. Later on, the site has evolved into a major tourist attraction, with an interpretation centre of the Açores UNESCO Global Geopark located underground.
