Lagoa Comprida fills one of various maars of Holocene age in the Caldeira das Sete Lagoas on the highland of Flores: the depression formed due to a phreatomagmatic explosion, induced by the contact between magma and groundwater. The hills in the background are Morro Alto (914 m) and Pico dos Sete Pés (849 m).
