The extremely humid highland of Flores is far from untouched: the flowers shown in the foreground of the scene belong to Hedychium gardnerianum (the Kahili ginger) and Hydrangea macrophylla (the hortensia), both not native to the Azores. Lagoa Funda in the background fills a maar of Holocene age: the depression formed due to a phreatomagmatic explosion, induced by the contact between magma and groundwater.
