Rijeka, also known as Fiume, represents the main port city of Croatia. It has been shaped by various influences over the centuries, including Austro-Hungarian and Italian ones. The Adriatic Palace represents a heritage from the times of the Austro-Hungarian Empire: it was completed in 1897 to house the first Hungarian shipping company which, converted into a Croatian company named Jadrolinija, still uses the same building as its headquarters.
