View from the vicinity of the Mirador de los Volcanes over the Altiplano in W direction to the volcanic complex of the dormant Ampato (6288 m), the stratovolcano Sabancaya (5976 m), and the extinct Volcán Hualca Hualca (6025 m), from left to right. Volcán Sabancaya has shown repeated activity since 1986 and may produce several explosions a day, with ash clouds rising 3 km and more. This image depicts the early stage of an eruption, with a small plume consisting mainly of steam.
