The hillslope settlements of San Javier (Comuna 13) had the reputation as one of the most dangerous places in the World in the outgoing 20th Century, suffering from drug-related gang wars. Still populated by economically challenged people, Comuna 13 has undergone a dramatic improvement. Numerous wall paintings tell the story of Comuna 13, even though at least one large international enterprise has placed its commercials among the murals decorating the neighbourhood.
