Irrigation channels, known as levadas, have formed a critical infrastructure for centuries. They transport water from the Central Mountain Massif down towards the lower slopes, leading through (sometimes long) tunnels, pristine laurel forests, and along steep mountain sides. More recently, levadas also have become popular hiking routes.
