Laurel forests (laurisilva), with the characteristic tree species of Apollonias barbujana, Laurus novocanariensis, Ocotea foetens, and Persea indica, occupy most of the N slopes of Madeira. In 1999, they have been recognized as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO. The trunks seen in this picture most likely belong to Laurus novocanariensis.
