The Ritigraben represents a very active and intensively researched debris flow channel. Debris flows mostly originate from the unstable front of a rock glacier and reach the Matter Valley just downstream from the recycling plant of St. Niklaus. Damaged trees, when analyzed in detail, help to learn more about past debris flows.
