Pasterze with Großglockner

WI_at071_505.jpg

View from Franz-Josefs-Höhe in NW direction to the remnants of the Pasterze, one of Austria's largest glaciers. The proglacial lake formed in the 2010s due to massive recession of the glacier. Großglockner (3798 m) and Glocknerwand (3722 m) are shown in the left centre. Rock fall from the steep mountain face has resulted in a debris cover on the right side of the Pasterze which reduces the recession rate as it protects the ice from solar radiation. Johannisberg (3453 m) appears in the right central background.
