The forest in the foreground of the photo, at an elevation of approx. 1200 m asl., is dominated by Pinus pinaster, in this case growing on peridotite. The Sierra Bermeja represents the largest outcrop of ultrabasic rocks in the W part of Europe. These rocks once formed in the Earth's mantle. They were uplifted in the course of subduction processes, and came to the surface as the overlying rocks were eroded.
