This major former mosque was built in the period of Arab reign. After the Reconquista, a Roman-Catholic cathedral was inserted, resulting in a unique combination of Islam and Christian architecture and symbols. Representing one of the largest religious buildings worldwide, it has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984.
